Nakia has always loved books and words—as a child she moved the family set of encyclopedias to her room to begin her first personal library. So a college decision to major in English and minor in Spanish was no surprise.
The surprise came in the form of a career in corporate finance. When the company offered a course on business writing, Nakia familiarized herself with their house style and helped her peers draft client notes. Her desk was likely the only one in the building where coworkers could find The Little Book of Common Sense Investing and Finance and Investment Handbook alongside her college copy of The Little, Brown Handbook and the company’s preferred guide, The Gregg Reference Manual.
In time, Nakia became a financial advisor. When appropriate, she patiently and plainly spoke about investment portfolios and retirement planning instead of relying on confusing industry jargon. Later, she took on a project management role for advisors, adding Project Management Essentials to her professional bookshelf. Nakia was responsible for developing and running training programs for future financial advisors and ghostwrote numerous articles on the company intranet.
Nakia began her entrepreneurial journey in 2018 when she left the world of corporate finance and started Best Life Ever TESOL. Over time, she received opportunities to support editorial and audio endeavors for clients. As these areas of her business grew, Nakia grew with them, joining ACES: The Society for Editing and taking advantage of available training and conferences.
Eventually, popular services no longer matched business branding and a new brand identity was needed. After market research, Best Life Ever TESOL rebranded as Pennies & Prose. This allowed Nakia to return to her prose-focused roots while maintaining a professional interest in saving pennies through prudent financial decisions.
Nakia is excited for the opportunity to put her passion for clear communications to work for you as your trusted partner for prudent financial planning insights and precision edits prior to publication.
